Knowing that fast, reliable, broadband connectivity is a crucial element for an around-the-world cruise, Italian yachtsman Andrea Recordati chose KVH’s TracPhone V3 with mini-VSAT Broadband for Indio, his custom 100-foot Wally sailing yacht.
It seems natural that Mr. Recordati would want the high-performance TracPhone V3 for Indio, as the maxi yacht is a state-of-the-art vessel in every way. Noted naval architect German Frers designed the boat with premier European yacht builder Wally, and it features a carbon hull, super high modulus carbon fiber mast, titanium deck reinforcements, and a powerful yet elegant style perfect for racing or cruising. Aboard Indio, Mr. Recordati has won several Maxi Yacht races, in the Mediterranean and transatlantic.
Indio will traverse plenty of ocean during Mr. Recordati’s world cruise. Plans for the five-year tour, which will be done in stages, include the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, California, Hawaii, South Pacific, Australia, and New Zealand.
“When I am onboard, the TracPhone V3 will help me to stay in contact with my family, the office, and my business contacts,” says Mr. Recordati. “The skipper will make use of the mini-VSAT Broadband Internet connection, as well, to look at weather forecasts and keep all port duties under control.”
In addition to wanting a state-of-the-art satellite communications system that would keep him connected from anywhere around the globe, Mr. Recordati also wanted a system rugged enough for demanding sea conditions, and streamlined enough to fit in with the distinctively sleek design of a Wally yacht.
The TracPhone V3 includes a fully stabilized, 14.5” (37 cm) satellite communications antenna that weighs just 25 pounds (11.3 kg), a powerful ViaSat ArcLight® spread spectrum modem, and a sleek antenna control unit that are all fully integrated and configured for easy installation. ArcLight spread spectrum technology enables very small antennas like the TracPhone V3 to receive satellite transmissions with the speed and reliability of older, 1-meter VSAT antennas that use TDMA transmission schemes. KVH’s high-efficiency RingFire™ antenna design and dielectric feed rod technology mean the TracPhone V3 offers great performance, even in poor weather, and its rugged, lightweight design is perfect for use on high-performance vessels.
On Indio, the TracPhone V3 antenna is installed on a mast spreader, and a special cabling configuration was used so the antenna can be moved to a transom pole if needed, for example, during a distance race. Mr. Recordati plans to do the Transpac, a race from Los Angeles to Honolulu during Indio’s travels around the globe.
“I chose the TracPhone V3 for the compact size of the dome, the outstanding data upload and download performance and excellent global coverage of the mini-VSAT Broadband network, the high-quality Voice over IP (VoIP) service, and the low cost per megabyte,” says Mr. Recordati, listing the unique features that helped him choose this solution. “The TracPhone V3 is a big step forward compared to the Inmarsat FB250 I was using previously!”
Ryan Smith, KVH’s National Sales Manager for Leisure Products, has noted an emerging trend for yacht owners who want to sail and also stay engaged in corporate and personal life. “Broadband at sea is making it possible for people to spend more time on their boats because they can stay connected, even while realizing the dream of sailing around the world,” says Smith.
Aboard Indio, it seems the checklist for a five-year sailing cruise is complete:
